How young children, caregivers, and pregnant women use public space across India
Young children and caregivers account for a significant portion of the urban population in India. The government is currently working on various projects to develop child-friendly urban infrastructure but unsafe and restricted urban spaces are forcing young families to stay indoors.
In 18 cities, household surveys were used to assess and evaluate trends in how urban public spaces are used by pregnant women, young children and caregivers. Through the research process, existing barriers and opportunities were identified at city level. Recommendations were then developed based on these to increase public space usage among young children and caregivers. Some examples include:
- Improving infrastructure for pedestrians and quality of public transport
- Engaging directly with communities to better understand needs and dynamics
- Increasing awareness of dedicated areas for young children, their caregivers and pregnant women
The study aims to support policymakers in India to take informed decisions on public space design addressing the needs of children and caregivers. Download the report for more insights on recommended interventions, ranging from policymaking and access to funding, to monitoring and evaluation.
