This short book looks at how a busy intersection in Istanbul – Zümrütevler Square – was transformed in 2019 to create a space for families to meet, with sitting areas and low-cost play furniture. Crossed by many children on their walk to school, the intersection commonly saw dangerous driving and illegal parking. The intervention was implemented by architects Superpool, with support from Maltepe Municipality, the Bernard van Leer Foundation and NACTO’s Global Designing Cities Initiative. Available in Turkish below.
The booklet in your hand analyses our Zümrütevler Square Interim Implementation process as a case analysis; focuses on the design of streets and provides basic information about the interim implementation’s process, pedestrian-priority design strategies and materials used.
