From over a thousand entries, 22 finalists have been announced for the Good Start Challenge – a €2.6 million global initiative to advance innovative, practical solutions that improve the wellbeing of parents and caregivers of babies, toddlers and young children.
Recent research shows that becoming a parent reshapes the human brain to an extent comparable to adolescence – and the caregiving a child receives in their early years fundamentally shapes their development. Supporting caregivers to raise the next generation is an investment in building stronger communities.
Supporting caregivers to raise the next generation is an investment in building stronger communities.
The choice of finalists was incredibly difficult. The Challenge surfaced a wide range of bold and creative ideas from across Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia. Contextually relevant and rooted in lived experience, these ideas predominantly came from grassroots and community-based organisations and social enterprises.
Some entrants had never worked with parents and caregivers before hearing about the Challenge. The breadth of media coverage – with over 800 mentions in outlets with an estimated reach of 264 million readers – shows how deeply the topic of parental wellbeing resonates around the world.
The 22 finalists include initiatives focused directly on reducing trauma, anxiety and depression among parents. Some are aimed at those with specific vulnerabilities, such as families experiencing displacement. Many use new technologies, from AI to WhatsApp groups, to scale guidance and peer support.
Other projects tackle important root causes of caregiver stress – from models of shared childcare, to initiatives that combine parenting support with livelihoods, or improving access to healthcare. Gender equality is a recurring theme, with several finalists involving fathers to challenge unequal caregiving loads.
The 22 finalists each receive a grant of €50,000 to further develop their idea, alongside capacity-building support that includes a three-day workshop, virtual training sessions and one-to-one coaching. In June 2026, up to six winners will receive a further €200,000 to scale their solutions.
