Over the past few years, the world has obsessed over AI. This year’s spotlight fell on AI assistants as systems that can learn, adapt, predict and solve complex problems. And yes – the progress being made in technology is remarkable.
But many of the capabilities we find extraordinary in machines are things parents have been doing for centuries. They learn constantly. Adapt in real time. Predict needs before they are expressed. Generate answers from minimal prompts.
And they do it powered by something technology cannot replicate: love, empathy, generations of human experience.
Too often, they do it without enough support.

We celebrate machines for their ability to observe, interpret, predict and respond. But when parents use those same capabilities to care for a child, we rarely describe it as intelligence.

The cognitive and emotional work involved in raising a child remains largely invisible. This campaign makes that intelligence visible – because once we recognise how much creative energy and real problem solving parenting requires, it becomes impossible to ignore how much support parents deserve.

Becoming a parent is a time of profound physical, emotional and social transformation, often filled with awe and exhaustion. For many caregivers – particularly those living in underserved communities – the early years of parenthood can also bring immense pressure and overwhelm.
From sneaking vegetables into dinner and turning an ordinary walk into an adventure, to protecting their children and finding ways to provide for their future, parents are quietly solving the everyday challenges that shape their children’s lives.
Parents are the most resourceful people on the planet.
Yet much of what they do every day goes unnoticed.
Why we relaunched the original assistant
When the world began spotlighting the next generation of AI assistants, we saw an opportunity. Not to criticise technology, but to borrow its language and use it to see parenting differently. Because many of the features that amaze us in technology are capabilities parents have been developing for centuries.

Long before a child’s first words are fully formed, their parents are already learning their language.
A toddler can ask for something in words nobody else can decipher, and their parent understands immediately. They can read the smallest change in expression, tone or behaviour and sense what their child might need next- sometimes before the child knows it themselves.
Response generation from minimal prompts
Parents are also extraordinary generators.
From a single word, question or half-formed idea, they can create an entirely new bedtime story. They provide thoughtful, elaborate and reassuring answers to an endless stream of “why?” questions – day after day, ideally without losing their minds. It takes remarkable creativity, patience and imaginative power.

Supporting the most powerful problem solving system
The Van Leer Foundation works globally to improve the environments in which babies, toddlers and their caregivers grow and develop. We bring together people with different perspectives and support them in achieving large-scale impact through funding, networks, executive education, technical assistance and knowledge. An essential part of this work is recognising and supporting parents and caregivers – particularly those facing additional pressure or structural barriers – so they are not expected to carry the responsibility of raising the next generation alone.
Because supporting parents is not only about helping individual families. It is about building stronger services, policies, communities and environments around them.
