The municipality of Tel Aviv has launched a new guide to holding play street events (currently available in Hebrew only) in partnership with the Urban95 programme in the city. Play streets involve closing streets to traffic to allow for organised play.

The first event was held in August 2021 at Neve Sha’anan, a neighbourhood with a high population of asylum seekers. It was considered a huge success, attended by about 70 children. The next event attracted 130 children, and play streets continued in the neighbourhood on a regular basis.

The municipality plans to expand the play street model to other neighbourhoods in 2022 as an ongoing activity.

Tel Aviv has shared its learning from these events with our two new Urban95 partner cities in Israel, Beit Shemesh and Tira, which also plan to explore holding their own play streets this year.
