From March to October 2021, 25 cities in India embarked on a mission to improve the quality of life of young children and their caregivers. This report sheds light on the interventions they designed and implemented through stories from each city.
The interventions, which range across sectors, included areas for toddlers in public parks, reclaiming unused space for caregiving and play, and creating safer walking experiences and connections with public transport.
An early childhood lens in urban planning and design, especially at a neighbourhood-scale, is a sustainable and inclusive way to reimagine our cities.
These cities were the first cohort of the Nurturing Neighbourhoods Challenge, hosted by the Smart Cities Mission of the Indian Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in collaboration with the Bernard van Leer Foundation.
