Roma Empowerment and Support for Inclusion: Ghent Case Study

This case study highlights effective ways to increase young Roma families’ access to quality education in Ghent, Belgium.

This case study looks at the Bridging Figures (BIEMs) – The Intra European Migration School Mediators project in Ghent, which supported improving communications between Roma parents and schools so Roma children can access a quality education: approximately 250 Roma children and their families were reached in four schools. The case study highlights the importance of the political will and making universal policies inclusive rather than targeting specific groups.

This target group of newcomers are often insufficiently acquainted with our educational system. Here the challenge is to introduce the parents to the classroom and to the school.
