The Early Years: Maternal Mental Health

This policy brief captures what we know, why it matters, and what policymakers can do to support maternal mental health.

Millions of parents and caregivers around the world suffer with mental health issues, which has a severe impact on children’s health and development. In fact, in developing countries as many as one in five mothers experience depression after childbirth.

In response, there are a number of ways to support mothers and other caregivers in coping with their mental health challenges. By intervening early, stress can be minimised during pregnancy, and they can forge nurturing relationships with their children.

We produced this policy brief as part of a series that compiles all the need-to-know information on the early years.
