Based on a research initiative conducted in partnership with the University of Edinburgh and the Eindhoven University of Technology, this collection on supporting urban childhoods shares spatial knowledge on how caregivers use public space in Pune (India) and Istanbul (Türkiye). Using observation as the primary tool, researchers explored how young children and their caregivers make use of public spaces in disadvantaged locations for everyday use.
Within the two different geographies, we see the multifaceted nature and use of public spaces, issues concerning safety, use of spaces in front of the home, on the one hand, and on the other, we also see the marginalised position of caregivers and children in high-density urban areas.
