Cities for Play and Sitting: A Shift in Perspective to Public Space

This report presents a step-by-step process of intervention in the public space in the cities of Griesheim and Brühl.

How can we create friendlier, greener cities for all children? Cities for playing and sitting? This report presents a step-by-step process of intervention in the public space in the cities of Griesheim and Brühl, which took into account the participation and interests of children, the elderly and those with reduced mobility. The text details the planning stages and the identification of relevant routes, mapped by children and the elderly, which resulted in the choice of locations for the installation of play and seating objects in the two German cities.

In 2009, Griesheim was recognized as the first City for Play and, in 2015, it also became Germany’s first City for Sitting. Meanwhile, Brühl can be considered the first municipality to develop both two concepts in parallel.
